Running a paid advertising campaign on a search engine such as Yahoo! or Google is a way of providing an instant boost to your search engine results. All of the major search engines have some form of sponsored advertising service. These services are commonly known as 'pay-per-click' as you are only charged when a search engine user clicks on your ad and is taken to your website.
Pay-per-click engines promote your website through site-specific keywords which you bid an amount of money on. An advert for your site will be displayed every time one of your keywords is entered into the search engine. Each time someone clicks on one of your ads (this is known as a 'click-through') you are charged the amount that you bid. With most search engines, the ranking is based on the highest bidder, so if you have bid more than anyone else for a particular keyword, your ad will appear at the top of search results for that keyword.
While this is a great way to give your website instant search engine visibility, running a pay-per-click campaign can take a lot of time. The first steps in a pay-per-click campaign involve a certain amount of trial and error, as some keywords may perform better than others and changes may be necessary. The campaign needs constant monitoring to ensure keywords are still relevant and getting traffic, and that you are not bidding too high or too low for keywords.
AdWords pay-per-click ads appear to the right of Google search results
